The European Union celebrates Eurovision 2024!

Europe Day is celebrated by the European Union every year on May 9, and is considered the day that peace and unity were established in Europe after World War II. Also on that day, the “Schuman Declaration” was signed, which expressed the idea of a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would render the idea of war between European nations unthinkable. Robert Schuman’s proposal is considered the beginning of today’s European Union.

As part of the Europe Day celebrations, the Representation of the European Union in Sweden, the Representation of the European Parliament in Sweden and the offices of Europe Direct are organizing two events in Malmö, on 9 and 10 May, to celebrate Europe Day in conjunction with the Eurovision Song Contest 2024!

May 9 – Let’s meet at the Eurovillage!

On May 9, at the place where the Eurovillage will be set up, there will be a booth belonging to the European Union. Visitors of all ages and from all countries are welcome there to discuss the EU’s goals and values, as well as to share their vision for Europe’s future. In addition, they will be informed on how to benefit from the services of local Europe Direct offices, about the EU and their rights as citizens, for example when working, travelling, studying or participating in the EU’s democratic procedures and institutions.

This stand will host various Eurovision activities, such as quizzes, interviews and video compilations, which will highlight specific moments from Eurovision’s history that promote European cohesion, cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as solidarity between post-war nations.

May 10 – Talk at Malmö University!

The following day, on May 10, at the University of Malmö, very interesting discussions will be held, that will address the relationship between Eurovision and the European Union. More specifically, people who are interested will be able to watch and take part in discussions between scientists, students, diplomats and other guests who share their vision for Europe and highlight EU values linked to the history of Eurovision, such as human rights , media freedom and cultural diversity. Information will also be provided on opportunities provided through EU programs, such as Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps, career in the EU and, of course, the upcoming European elections.

For all those interested, registration are already open and is free for everyone! You can find more information here!
