Non-binary artist NEMO have been selected as Switzerland’s representative at Eurovision 2024. The song with which they will compete in Malmö is ‘The Code‘. The announcement was made by the country’s national broadcaster, SRF through the official channel of Eurovision on YouTube.
The selection of NEMO as Switzerland’s representative at this year’s Eurovision comes after a competitive process, where five artists stand out among 420 submitted songs. NEMO stood out with their unique sound and the honesty of the lyrics, winning the hearts of the jury and the audience.
“‘The Code’ is about the journey I started with the realisation that I am neither a man nor a woman. Finding myself has been a long and often difficult process for me. But nothing feels better than the freedom I have gained by realising that I am non-binary.”
“It is an incredible honour to be able to represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest. This platform offers a huge opportunity to build bridges between different cultures and generations. That‘s why it‘s very important to me as a gender-queer person to stand up for the entire LGBTQIA+ community.“
Who is NEMO
NEMO, aka Nemo Mettler, is a 25-year-old pop and rap artist from Biel. NEMO plays violin, piano and drums and is part of Bakara Music. On November 17, 2023, through their Instagram account and on the occasion of the release of their single “This Body “, they openly expressed itidentity as non-non-binary.
I haven’t talked about this publicly, but some of you already know: I don’t identify as male or female. I’m just NEMO. I like to think of gender as a galaxy and imagine myself as a little star floating somewhere in it. I feel most myself there.
With their single “Du ” they reached an impressive fourth place. In 2016, Nemo became famous overnight through an appearance at SRF Virus (#Cypher), which went viral on social media. Afterwards they released two EPs – through which 7 songs made it directly onto the official Swiss Singles Charts. Since then, Nemo has been awarded with an impressive five Swiss Music Awards. In 2021, NEMO participated in The Masked Singer Switzerland (Season 2), appeared as Panda and placed fifth.
We remind you that Switzerland has been drawn to the second semi-final of Eurovision 2024 (May 9), like Greece, and will even appear in the first half (positions 1-8).
