THE NETHERLANDS: Humphrey Campbell, old participant in the ESC, dies at age 66

Humphrey Campbell, the Surinamese singer who represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1992, died at the age of just 66. According to his family, the singer had recently been battling cancer.

Humphrey Campbell himself had announced last week that he was suffering from some serious illness, canceling his planned tour. Unfortunately, he lost his battle with cancer and passed away on March 25, 2024.

Who was Humphrey Campbell?

Born in Suriname, Humphrey Campbell settled in the Netherlands as a teenager, where he began his career and established himself as a singer. His music mainly belonged to the genre of jazz, always with a strong Latin American influence.

He entered the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest with the Netherlands with the song Wijs me de weg (Show me the way), having previously won the country’s national final for that year. In the competition, he took ninth place, while he became particularly loved and popular among the Dutch and not only public.

After his performance at Eurovision, he mainly pursued a multi-year career in the background, as a guest musician for artists such as Paul de Leeuw, Anita Meijer and Rob de Nijs. He was also a music teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatory.

Humphrey Campbell had decided to donate his body to science after death, so there will be no funeral and subsequent burial.
