Eurovision 2024: The city events are moved under more protection measures

After about 20 cancellations from the city events, related to Eurovision, the city of Malmö had to review some things, regarding the security and their conduct. In particular, the only music stage, without some security at the entrance, will be scrapped, in contrast to the original program, as reported by the Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan .

The organizers of the planned events in the city that is hosting this year’s competition, seem to have a full understanding of the potential risks surrounding the running of the competition.

In particular, the project director of the city of Malmö, Karin Karlsson, told the newspaper Sydsvenskan:

We decided to move the program from Eurovision Street to Folkets Park. We wanted to create a program that was fun in the park, and after the dropouts of the artists, we had to rethink it.

The reactions do not only concern the protests, as some of the artists themselves seem to show their displeasure, withdrawing their participation in the city’s events.

The drop outs of the artists seem to be a result of the war in Gaza and Israel’s participation in Eurovision. Some artists who decided not to participate are Dotter and Titiyo. This weekend, Magnus Carlsson (a member of Alcazar) also pulled out of the event he was supposed to be performing at.

According to the mayor of Malmö, Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh:

There are indications that there is some pressure on artists to drop out. Due to protests against Israel’s participation, security procedures are further strengthened, but it is not the need for security that causes the events to be moved. We are not the ones who politicized Eurovision in this way. We just have to create the best Eurovision possible based on the circumstances and we think this is a good solution.

Eurovision 2024 is just around the corner and all eyes are on Malmö.
