After the rehearsals were over, it was time for the Eurovision season to officially begin. And what could be better than a magnificent Opening Ceremony combined with elegant appearances by the artists on the so-called Turquoise Carpet .
The… so-called “ Turquoise Carpet ” in Eurovision terminology refers to the parade of the competing artists of each year during the Opening Ceremony of the Eurovision season. The event is almost similar to that of red carpets, where various foreign celebrities walk in events from the Oscars to the various pop music awards. Except that the Eurovision carpet is in a different color! The Eurovision Opening Ceremony is calendared after the first and second technical rehearsals of all countries, specifically on the Sunday before the week of the Semi-Finals and the Final. For this year, the event will take place today , Sunday, May 5, 2024 .
The venue that will host the Opening Ceremony and the Turquoise Carpet is none other than the iconic Malmo Live Conference and Concert Hall, in the heart of Malmö, a few steps from Malmö Central Railway Station.
Accredited journalists, mass media and fan sites will line up on one side of the carpet to watch and capture the entire ceremony up close.
This event is about to get even more glamorous as Drag Superstars Elecktra and Tia Kofi have been confirmed as hosts.
Electra
The drag queen rose to fame as a cast member of the first season of Drag Race Sverige. Her biggest moment during the show was undoubtedly when her rendition of the song ‘Unna Daj’ went viral thanks to the comical way she delivered it.
The impact of her music led SVT to include her in the line-up for Sweden’s national final for Eurovision, Melodifestivalen 2024. With the dance track “Banne Maj”.
Tia Kofi
Clapham queen Tia Kofi has starred in not one but two seasons of Drag Race. She made a huge impression on the second series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK so much so that she was invited back for the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs the World, in which she was eventually crowned champion.
In addition to Drag Race, Tia Kofi has had a career as a pop star and has made several appearances on British television, often as a certified Eurovision expert.
The Opening Ceremony & Turquoise Carpet of Eurovision 2024 will take place today, Sunday 5 May, and will be streamed live via both the Eurovision Song Contest YouTube channel and a TikTok live on the Eurovision account on the platform. The show starts around 15:30.
