MALTA: New rules and no live final for MESC 2024!

Last night, through broadcaster TVM, Malta confirmed the country’s participation in Eurovision 2024, in Malmö, Sweden. The method of selection for their entry, will be through the MESC national final, for the third year in a row.

More specifically, MESC will return to television sets between October and November, several months earlier than in previous years.

The hopeful artists are required to submit their participation from August 28 until September 20, 2023.

 

The new rules

Despite the same selection process, this year, changes are expected in the event, compared to previous years.

More specifically:

  • During the Final, which will take place in January, live on tape performances of the finalists accompanied by video clips will be shown.
  • The quarter-finals are cancelled.
  • The semi-final stage of MESC will last for a few weeks where the artists will perform their song live, while also having the opportunity to get to know them better, to establish themselves to the Maltese audience.
  • The number of participants in the semi-final phase is still unknown, while the finalists will be 12.
  • In addition, the broadcaster will allocate 5,000 euros to each finalist to shoot the video clip and for their preparation.
  • Finally, for the first time in the history of the national final, two new prizes will be awarded. The first is ” Best Video Clip ” and the second is ” Best New Talent

Last year, Malta was represented by the band “The Busker” with the song “Dance (Our Own Party). Unfortunately, they failed to qualify for the Grand Final, finishing in last place with 3 points.
