The story of Intervision!

The contest began in the 1970s as a counterproposal to the Eurovision Song Contest. It ran for four years from 1977 to 1980, before being abolished and organized by OIRT, an equivalent of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) but for communist states.

During this period the competition was held in Sopot, Poland with entries from Czechoslovakia, East Germany, the Soviet Union and Romania.

Intervision returned in 2008 when it was held in Sochi with the participation of 11 countries of the former Soviet Union. Back in 2008 both Lithuania and Estonia ruled out any involvement in the competition, while Georgia withdrew shortly before the event due to the Russian invasion of South Ossetia.

Tajikistan won Intervision 2008 with Tahmina Niyazova covering Hero by Mariah Carey!

The competition was supposed to be held in 2009 but failed to take place as Dushanbe (Capital of Tajikistan) expressed its inability to host the event.

Preparations for another return were also made in 2014, but any discussions were postponed!

Intervision 2024 is expected to be supported by the Russian Ministry of Culture and will be broadcast by the Russian State Television Network Channel One.
